CHARACTER INFO.
NAME: Keith
CANON: Voltron: Legendary Defender
AGE: 20 in game (18 in canon)
APPEARANCE: Keith!
CANON POINT: 3x7

BACKGROUND: Official wikipedia | Official show website Fan wiki.

PERSONALITY: The audience first learns about Keith through a passing mention: he's the "most talented pilot" that got kicked out of the Galaxy Garrison because of a disciplinary problem. This circumstance left Keith lost and aimless. Not only had the most important person in his life, Shiro, been declared dead, but Keith just didn't have it together. This results in him following an odd feeling that leads to him becoming a paladin of Voltron. As a paladin, Keith was no longer just a temperamental and socially awkward youth. He now had a purpose.

Keith starts off his paladin experience as a bit of an unreasonable hothead. It's fitting that Keith starts off in the Red lion, who's just as brash, temperamental, and difficult as Keith himself. Only a talented and intuitive pilot like Keith could handle the difficult Red at first. The problem is that Keith's troublesome side is worsened by his tendency to isolate himself from others. He doesn't open up about how he feels outside of his outbursts, and he prefers to act on instincts honed by his isolationist tendency to only listen to his impulses. He doesn't pause to consider the people around him.

In fact, Keith's greatest weakness is likely his inability to empathize with others. He doesn't just fail to consider others—he flat out doesn't understand what their feelings might be in any given moment. The only exception to this is Shiro, and even then he's not great it. A lot of his development in the show and as a member of Audentes has been focused on him learning the little ticks and actions of the people around him. It's difficult for him to tell when or why someone's upset. When Pidge wanted to leave the team to find her family, Keith shouts her down for the decision. Shiro has to remind him that no one can be forced to be a part of the team. It's apparent that Keith only understands that he thinks she shouldn't leave. After he becomes the leader of Team Voltron and he's forced to deal with countless members of Audentes, he's gotten better at considering other people's feelings. That doesn't mean he's great at it, but he's better. Perhaps more importantly: he also knows how important it is to have these people in his life. The isolation that initially led to this lack of empathy and extreme social awkwardness is no longer a feature of his existence. It can't be.

It helps that Keith's circumstances make him incredibly impressionable. He grew up with an abandonment complex after his mother left him, and only believed that only Shiro believed in him despite his reputation as the greatest pilot at the Galaxy Garrison. He can be extremely mercurial, but by the same token can adapt quickly to new situations. Otherwise, he wouldn't be as relentless as he happens to be. Because Keith's struggled with his mom leaving him, he's been reluctant to let most people in. Losing Shiro after this only worsened things for him. He never wanted to let people in because of his fear of being hurt. But he's always craved a connection to others. One of his cutest moments is when he realizes that on a quantum level, everyone is connected in the universe. He seems incredibly happy about this. Both in Audentes and as a member of Team Voltron, Keith has expressed a desire to be one with the team. More importantly, he believes in the cause he's fighting for, and he's not likely to give up on it anytime soon. The multiverse needs help.

Despite all this, Keith is still rash and easily riled up. Getting under his skin is still possible. When he's forced to step up, he will, but he's still very young. He has a long way to go to be the person he can be (and according to Shiro, that's as Team Voltron's leader). His temper is short. He still lacks the ability to confide in others what he's really feeling. But it's important to note that this flaw is more prevalent in his canon self than his Futurology self: Keith has learned to open up to others … at least somewhat. He's always been needlessly blunt, which leads to him being honest. If he believes in something, he'll fight for it. The problem is that he's still likely to shout someone down if he doesn't like what they have to say. He'll dismiss them or push them away. He's getting better—with Keith sometimes baby steps are better than nothing.

Part of Keith's reluctance to reach out to others lies in his abandonment complex. His mother left him. His father died (presumably). Shiro was presumed dead on two separate occasions. This complex undoubtedly is the cause for a number of Keith's insecurities. While Keith is comfortable when he's confident in something, he lashes out against the unfamiliar. This is because he wants things to be simpler for him, and because Keith doesn't know how to handle the weight of expectations upon him. He'd rather run from those expectations or meet them head on according to his terms. It's clear that this is how he's acted his entire life. Being more involved with other people has forced him out of his comfort zone.

But when it comes to Keith's comfort zone, he's bound to drag his feet a little. He can get used to people, sure, so long as they don't have too many expectations of him. Keith has no problem throwing himself into any fray when he's asked (or even if he's not asked). He doesn't mind if that fray may cost him his life, just so long as he's doing the right thing. On multiple occasions, Keith shows a very self-sacrificing bent, where he values protecting the mission and the overall goals over himself (pointing to a big-picture point of view). The problem is that when asked to step outside of what's comfortable to be a leader, he balks at it, and eventually runs (both in canon and in game). He doesn't see how he could be suited to that position because he believes he doesn't have any leadership qualities (thus referring to himself as nothing more than a "loner"). Keith's perspective on himself isn't necessarily correct: he's proactive, good at seeing the bigger picture, and knowing how to act on numerous fronts to get a job done. He just hasn't matured enough to take on that responsibility just yet.

All in all, it's apparent that a lot of Keith's actions are the result of a lifestyle in which he was undersocialized as a result of unfortunate circumstances. Now that he's thrust into multiple teams where he has to consider others, he's been forced to grow. He's also been forced to realize that he likely matters. Whether he's fully cognizant of that is another thing altogether. For now, he'll likely come off as a little selfish and needlessly reckless until that changes.

ABILITIES:

  • General piloting: Called the "best pilot at the garrison," Keith is fairly talented, able to fly through an asteroid belt with his lion robot without running into too much trouble. He can take to piloting just about anything with ease.
  • Mecha piloting: An attention of his previous talent, he's the pilot for the Red Lion and later the Black Lion. As the latter's paladin, he has to manage both piloting a lion he's unfamiliar with and Voltron in its united form. As a result, he has "general mecha piloting" downpat.
  • General resilience and combat training: He takes to fighting naturally, and seems to not be able to be taken down easily. He manages to pilot his robot against Emperor Zarkon, even if Zarkon is able to handle most of the robots with ease. Zarkon mentions that he fights like a "galra" because of his ability to give him a good fight. Yes, he's inside of his lion, but it speaks volumes about him, especially in contrast to other hand-to-hand combat scenarios he finds himself in.
  • Swordplay: Wielding a sword (and other blades) comes naturally to him. His swift movement means he likely prefers smaller blades to larger ones, but he utilizes both rather well. He stands out to an alien ghost for his ability to fight with a blade in the comics.
  • Covert field work: "Espionage" isn't exactly the right word for this, but he takes to field work rather easily. He can handle field missions rather well.
  • Burgeoning leadership skills: While his development of these are partly on hold, they are a part of his character. When he doesn't think about it, he is quite the leader.
  • Limited camouflage: This is a spell granted to Keith during the final leg of his time with ALASTAIR. This allows Keith to blend in with his surroundings, but he still gives off vital signs. If anyone comes too close or disrupts his positioning, there will be a ripple revealing where he is at the moment. The spell will continue to tire Keith until he practices it.
  • Being half-Galra: Keith is half-Galra, though we don't know what that means for his abilities. It might be the reason behind his resilience, but it's hard to say. It might be why he could sense the Blue Lion in the desert, but no one can really say. He might have increased strength, but, again, it's hard to say. One day canon may tell me … but then it might just not.

    INVENTORY:

  • ALASTAIR uniform (now defunct).
  • Custom shortened jacket (now defunct).
  • Titanium ring with inlaid ruby (increases reaction time for one hour, 24 hour recharge).
  • Belore, a lynx.

  • ALASTAIR pajamas (from Haise).
  • Suit (from Giovanni).
  • Suit (from Leramzen mission).
  • Ornate tapestry (depicting time with Goo, the train with Rey, holding hands with Lance, saving Shiro with Lance, cuddling cats on Terra Felis, piloting the jail ship, hugging Rey upon her return).
  • A collection of trinkets and junk for Pidge, Shiro, and Lance (from the Mothership).
  • Lingerie (from Loki).
  • Stun gun (with holster).

  • A goofy bucket/fisherman's hat (from Fiona)
  • A liter of apple cider from Woodhurst (from Oliver)
  • A jack o'lantern full of candy (from ... Keith himself)
  • Paladin armor (red). This armor allows him to propel himself with jets on his back, summon his bayard, float in space for prolonged periods of time with ease, withstand any toxins, and his helmet allows him to track heat signatures and identify specific information.
  • Black bayard (formerly red).
  • Blade of Marmora knife. Keith typically keeps it in its knife form, but it also turns into a sword.
  • Voltron pajamas with lion slippers (red).
  • Blade of Marmora stealth suit. This is similar to his paladin armor, but he doesn't have jets and it's not as fortified.

    HATHAWAY.
SUITABILITY: Keith has a lot of experience in being thrown into universal (and even multiversal) conflicts as a paladin of Voltron. When offered the opportunity to stay with the team, he sticks around and becomes the most adamant. His overall desire to do good is still a part of his character after over a year with Audentes. All that said, a large part of why Keith is staying with the team is avoidance. While he wholeheartedly believes that everyone needs to clean up the mess and wants to do good for the multiverse as a member of this new organization, he also doesn't want to go back and reclaim his leadership position with Voltron. Again, he believes in doing good. He believes in the team he's worked with for the past year and a half, even if a lot of people will now be gone. This has been true and will remain true. There's just this extra detail tacked on where he's been both been embracing and avoiding his leadership position, and he's finally caught in a crossroads where he has to make a decision. That said, he will have some qualms with the fact that the new organization is run like a mercenary guild. He'll prefer the original way of doing things, especially since he can see how it would go bad (and he prefers a more selfless altruism).

INCENTIVE: Keith's main incentive will be to keep Hathaway from becoming the kind of organization he doesn't want it to become (again, he prefers selflessness). But since he'll likely be allowed a more tangible incentive: he wants the agents to work back home to uncover and dismantle Lotor's operations and goals so that the Galra Empire can be further set in disarray. His idea is that once these intentions are fully discerned, he'll be able to return and take down Lotor with one sweeping mission.

    SPECIALIZATION:

Bruiser: At first glance, Keith is a bruiser through and through. His tendencies lean more toward a "fight now, figure it out later" kind of mentality. He has extensive training in both the front lines and on solo missions, making him rather suitable for this. He is most likely to plow headfirst into a problem without thinking twice. If anything, this is where he feels most confident. Keith has had a knife all his life that's defined his identity. He loves to train. There are no places where Keith would be happy to be kept out of a fight, and he has issues with anything that doesn't involve fighting.

Sentinel: That all said, Keith came into his own while becoming a protector of the universe. He finally found his place in the world. While Keith isn't empathetic or good at caring, he does believe in doing anything possible for the greater good. Though Keith can be selfish when he's uncomfortable in a situation, his overall nature is overwhelmingly selfless and self-sacrificing. What he lacks in understanding others and being supportive in a normal way he makes up for in actions. Everything he does is for the greater good. Keith isn't particularly capable of articulating this himself (he'd pick bruiser if given a choice).
