[Keith's heading around the block from the grocery store near his apartment when Shiro shows up right in his path. His eyes widen, fingers tightening around the tote bags that he carries for these occasions, and he moves forward, crouching down to the now-landed Shiro.]

What—how did you get here? ... Is it even safe to be out yet?

["Do you exist yet, Shiro?" So to speak.]

Wait. Back to the first question.

I have no idea. [ no, really. this is not something done deliberately or something he was prepared for. he's in his bare feetsies, for crying out loud.

shiro carefully pushes himself up and looks around. ] I was just--thinking. About you. And now I'm here.

Okay, first ... keep thinking about me. Just in case. [If anything, there's a sign that something might be related to thinking about Keith. Or anyone in general. The good news is that Shiro probably doesn't know anyone else. The bad news is ... that he could probably use someone to know that isn't Keith.]

Second. Um. Stand up and follow me inside. We're by my place.

[It does not in the least occur to Keith that it's weird to tell Shiro to keep thinking about him. Only Keith would say something that edges close to flirting and a pickup line with complete platonic earnestness. But that's Keith in a nutshell.]

[ okay, there's no helping the amused look or the small, huffed out laugh shiro gives as he stands. keith absolutely does not realize what that could sound like. he's just concerned. and that's really endearing in a purely keith way. ]

Alright. [ he says as he pushes himself up. ] Lead the way.

[ and thank goodness they are close by because he doesn't want to walk too far without shoes. ]

I'm guessing something like this hasn't happened before that you're aware of?

Not like this. [Teleporting like this hasn't happened at all. Keith slips into thought as he considers if this could be similar to what's happened to all the people who have left.

He doubts it, though.]

My roommate up and disappeared, but I don't think she went anywhere I can find. A lot of other people have, too.

[It's not good news. Keith feels a bit guilty telling Shiro, but he knows better than to just ... sugarcoat it. Hide it away. That isn't how they're going to get through this.]

But no one's done ... this. So. [A beat.] It's probably your power. Any chance you got all, uh. Glowy again?

[ he's not sure what to do with the information about other people disappearing--he's read about it on the network, but doesn't really have anything to add. so he just. files that away for future reference. ]

I don't think so. I was just in the safe house one minute, and here the next. [ keith's likely right that it's his power. ] I suppose if I had to end up with super powers, teleportation isn't the worst I could end up with.

[ would be nice if he'd done it on purpose, though. ]

[Though it will come out later, Keith knows better than to spell out the exact extent of things that can happen to someone while they're here. They can get powers that can mess with people's heads and emotions. They already had a bad situation where Shiro didn't handle what Keith said bluntly, so he's being more careful now.]

When you decide you're ready to fight here, it'll make it easier to get around. To get into places.

[Maybe it's not fair to assume he will fight, but that's what Keith does. Unlike his other careful decisions, this is one he doesn't second guess.

(Though he probably should.)]

[ shiro's in a better headspace than he was upon first arrival. much better, especially now that he's out of the safehouse, albeit accidentally. the kind of headspace where he can think a little more rationally about having to fight.

and it is a having to situation for him. he doesn't want to. he's never really wanted to. the galra took the choice of whether or not he did away from him, and now whoever has brought them here has done the same thing. as much as there's a large part of him (one he never acknowledges, because that would set him down a bad path when there are things he has to do) that really wants the fight to be over, he's also. somewhat grateful that he has to. because it means he doesn't have to trust someone else to watch keith's back. and this whole teleporting thing? ]

Yeah, it will make it easier. [which makes him wonder if whatever powers they get are unintentional. but he's not science-minded enough to even begin to think about how to answer that question, so he puts it aside. ]

How far did you say it was to your place?

[Where Shiro sees fighting as an obligation, Keith sees it as an act that gives him purpose. He believes in helping people, and he feels more at ease when that help comes at the end of a sword or knife. It's where he's felt more at home than anywhere else in his life. It's also why he balked at having to be a leader: that involved taking on tasks that he couldn't fathom, couldn't wrap his mind around. He just wanted to do what was right: it was as simple as that.

He sees it the same way here. He knows that he struggles with diplomacy, but the act of helping—either the people they've come with or Morningstar—comes easily to him.

Keith feels some relief in what Shiro says. It puts him at ease. Not seeing eye to eye on that could be hard, and sometimes Keith can tunnel vision on what he thinks is the right thing. That he's flexible with Shiro helps, but ...]

Right up here.

[As they turn the corner, there's a warehouse that's been converted into several apartment buildings. It was obviously an act done for money-saving reasons, and the apartment itself isn't that nice. But he and Ciri had agreed that getting a place with a view and little complications would be better than somewhere very nice.]

It's not much. I hope Ciri turns up soon so you can meet her. [He glances at Shiro, feeling a little awkward before adding.] You, uh. You have the same hair color.

[Keith is an awkward boy.]
